Frequency to Wavelength Converter
Calculate bidirectional wave properties using the fundamental wave relationship λ = v / f and f = v / λ. Explicitly select electromagnetic vacuum velocity (c), fiber optics, or acoustic sound media.
Exact speed of light in vacuum: 299,792,458 m/s.
Frequency (f)

Wavelength (λ)
Live Formula: λ = v / f = 299,792,458 m/s ÷ 1.0000e+6 Hz = 299.792 m
📐 Fundamental Wave Relationships
Wave frequency and wavelength are inversely proportional. The relationship depends entirely on the propagation speed v through the chosen medium:
λ = v / f (Wavelength = Speed ÷ Frequency)
f = v / λ (Frequency = Speed ÷ Wavelength)
In a vacuum, all electromagnetic waves travel at exactly c = 299,792,458 m/s.
💡 Worked Examples (Vacuum)
- 1 MHz Radio (AM Band): λ = 299,792,458 m/s ÷ 1,000,000 Hz ≈ 299.792 m.
- 100 MHz Radio (FM Band): λ = 299,792,458 m/s ÷ 100,000,000 Hz ≈ 2.998 m.
- 1 GHz Microwave: λ = 299,792,458 m/s ÷ 1,000,000,000 Hz ≈ 0.2998 m (29.98 cm).
- Sound Waves: Sound does not travel at light speed! In 20 °C air, a 1 kHz audio tone has a wavelength of 343 m/s ÷ 1,000 Hz = 0.343 m (34.3 cm).
